How and why I became a vegan...

There are people that can't understand this and can't accept that we won't have any more animal products in our house. So let me explain.

When I was little, we lived in Belgium, in a little town close to Brussels, in a somewhat cosmopolitan environment,  you might even say that it was an artificial environment. There we were very happy indeed. And every summer on our holidays we went to the north of the Netherlands, Friesland, where my family originates from. W...

The winner of this years NALA Christmas quiz is Mr A Powers of La Chataigneraie!  Congratulations!
The question which proved the most difficult was N° 6 from the ships "15th C square rigged" only 30% of respondents got the correct answer.
The second most difficult question was N° 8 from the food questions. "Red head";  only 50% answered correctly. The popular wrong answer was carrot top.
Sadly some of the quiz's went out with an error quoting the wrong number of letters in the answer to "Dai's...

Concern about the mistreatment of animals and unauthorised euthanasias in the Vendée

Posted by Marit De on Thursday, September 26, 2013, In : For the English Nala readers
In case you are unaware there are some concerns about the manager of a company that is responsible for dealing with stray animals ("fourrière") for about 150 towns in the Vendée. There are claims of mistreatment of animals and unauthorised euthanasias at the pound of Luçon.

Last week some people stopped a van that they believed was carrying bodies of dogs from the pound in Luçon in order to have the gendarmes take the bodies away for autopsy. However after a while the gendarmes were repla...

A Stray or not a Stray? That is the question.

Posted by Marit De on Saturday, June 29, 2013, In : For the English Nala readers

Article L211-23 of the Code rural et de la pêche maritime defines strays.

For a dog the definition is pretty much common sense, roughly translated, if it's out of earshot of the person responsible for it, no longer under their effective supervision or more than one hundred metres away from them, then it's a stray. Seems reasonable to me.

For a cat the definition raises some practical difficulties. Any cat that is not identified found more than 200 metres from habitation or more than 1000m from...

Jacqueline and one of her cats that she could keep.

A few years ago a mummy cat had a litter of kittens in someone's barn in a small hamlet. She and the kittens were “adopted” by the owner of the grange and his neighbours. Some of the kittens became house cats whilst the mother and some others enjoyed the freedom of the barn, whilst still permitting their human subjects to bring them food.

Unfortunately over the years the population expanded until one day the people decided that something...

Light at the end of the tunnel?

Posted by Marit De on Tuesday, June 4, 2013, In : For the English Nala readers

The French system for dealing with stray cats and dogs requires that they stay in a fourrière, an officially recognised kennel/pound for 8 working days. After that period, if they haven't been returned to their owner they can be given to an association for the protection of animals, provided that the association has access to an officially recognised shelter. If they can't be adopted and a vet agrees, they may be put down. When the legislation was discussed in the Senate, it was assumed tha...

This was made possible by the loving care and open hearted generosity of our foster families who do such a wonderful job of looking after kittens and cats prior to rehoming and by a fun and successful year of fundraising including coffee mornings, tea parties, lunch parties, strawberries and Pimms afternoons, v...

NALA family Quiz 2012

Posted by Marit De on Wednesday, January 9, 2013, In : For the English Nala readers
The winner of this year's NALA Family Quiz is Ms Julia Drake from Dyfed Wales.
Two questions which caused the most problems were " 8 A in a CP" and the Island "smoker". In both cases only 26% of answers were correct. Many replies thought it was 8 acres in a cricket pitch actually the correct answer was "8 Aces in a Canasta Pack", and lots failed to spot that "smoker" was an anagram of Skomer and suggested Puffin instead.
The TV programs had the most correct answers. The only one to cause proble...

Either you've got it or you haven't. I reckon we've got it...

We planned to get away in July:just a mid-week in a holiday park. The Friday afternoon before our departure we had to deliver a cat that had been adopted. On the way we saw a rather unkempt hen pecking by the side of the road. She was obviously in poor condition, but we couldn't stop because of the traffic.

After delivering the cat we returned by the same route and sure enough the hen was still there. We picked a safe place t...

The Mayors' Responsibilities

Posted by Marit De on Monday, July 16, 2012, In : For the English Nala readers

NALA 85480 was created in September 2010 and as well as dealing with unwanted animals, we've also been busy talking with the authorities trying to find more permanent solutions to the general problem of stray animals. The causes of much animal suffering are irresponsible owners who don't identify their animals and allow them to have unwanted babies and mayors who don't fulfill their obligations...
According to the Code rural et de la pêche maritime the mayor is responsible for dealing with ...

Yesterday morning I got a phone call from a woman. She asked me what associations did in case of negligence or mistreatment of animals. Would they be allowed to just take away their animal? My answer was no. The reason why she asked was the following.

One afternoon  in the beginning of this year she went with her Mum shopping. Her dog a little pedigree terrier was on his chain as usual in he garden. Before she left she noticed a dog cookie, one that she usually doesn't give to her dog, but sh...
